Maybe someone else has already figured it out or fixed it so it does work. Talk to someone else, i have no real idea on which files to replace to get the 7850 working legit. That card is old by now but it still works. Way way back when, i paid about $740 with shipping. I reckon it will have either an m2 or m1x, and also will be available with. A pc grafix card may be flashed to work on mac, but this costs money. You might consider waiting until the large-screen iMac gets released around Sep/Oct. So if you need that for troubleshooting, u r out of luck.
Usually a pc grafix card may work in a mac pro- with the following conditions: you will not see a boot screen until the grafix drivers have been loaded. About the only other choice might be the nvidia 680? As for replacing files to get your 7850 working, try or for some rough ideas. I’m running an MSI Radeon Vega 64 and it runs superbly in my Mac Pro 5,1.
I have done a pixlas mod on my power supply which is highly recommended to get enough power to any card. You will see nothing on the screen at all. I now have a PowerColor RX Vega 64 installed and running like a champ.
but for installing sierra, high sierra and mojave, the switch on the card has to be in the other position( yes, there’s a 2 position switch on the card) otherwise it will not boot and won’t install sierra, high sierra or mojave. i bought a sapphire mac version radeon 7950 way way back when.
